Do you know how Captain Picard lead?
Are you familiar with The Enterprise’s Captain Picard’s leadership style?
Do you know which lesson of Captain Picard’s you follow most often?

Leadership: Exactly what is it? post

Last week I shared a leadership article about regarding “Five Leadership Lessons from James T. Kirk“, the infamous Captain of The Enterprise in the Star Trek TV series. This week I thought I’d add another layer… “Five Leadership Lessons from Captain Jean-Luc Picard”, the rational and compassion leader of The Enterprise.

OK, I admit that this was a little cheeky until I really started to read the analogy. It really is sound and I suggest you take some time to read it. One of the take-aways I got from comparing the two leaders is how the role had changed, which ultimately required  different skills and capabilities of the leader.  This happens quite often in organizations.

Too often organization’s growth or circumstances require a different skill set from the leader to be successful. Often times when this occurs, the leader becomes ineffective (which is a shame because many different skills and capabilities are required for success). Have you even known an organization where the needs of the organization changed and the leadership just couldn’t provide what it needed to thrive? This happens and it doesn’t necessarily mean that the leader was “bad”, sometimes they just aren’t the right person to take on the new tasks.

Then feel free to answer the question below in our comment section:
Which lesson do you think made Captain Jean-Luc Picard a great leader?

Personally, I think it was Captain Picard’s wisdom, as opposed to Captain Kirk’s tenacity, which assisted Captain Picard to be most successful (a Lesson 1, 2, and 3 combo)! Yet, I believe the most important takeaways from this article regarding leadership lessons is the last paragraph (Final Takeaway). It’s profound. I read it several times to allow it to sink in!

Remember:
Maximizing resources may not be the best answer, but I know that optimizing resources will always support success!
