Workspace Clutter – Yikes!

Do you have a cluttered workspace?
Are you looking at a desk that is layered with stuff?
Do you routinely wipe down your workspace?

This week I wrote about making a fresh start for yourself in my Back to School post. I shared how great it is to get a fresh start and why adults, too, perceive this time of the year as a fresh start. Additionally, I posed a few questions to help you with a fresh start – and I admit, one of them really pierced an arrow through my heart. Why? I don’t even have a clean desk and I was asking you if you do! So, here’s my aggressive remedy…

FULL WORKSPACE CLUTTER DISCLOSURE:

The workspace clutter, in the image above, is the right half of one of my office’s workspace cluttered areas. Yep, it’s not the only clutter gig in my office – yikes!

Truth: Workspace Clutter Happens!

Clutter happens, but why? You don’t need to beat yourself up over clutter – let’s understand why it happens. Clutter usually occurs because either you:

  • are a happening person and can’t keep up with your productivity level (yay).
  • are lazy at cleaning up after you work on something (not so much yay).

As I look at this photo, I realize that I’m more the “I can’t keep up with my productivity level” workspace clutter person than “I have clutter because I’m sloppy or lazy”. Yet, truth be known, sometimes I just don’t want to pick up my own clutter – like for the last week! As I’m sure you noticed 🙂

WARNING: Workspace Clutter is Contagious

Have you ever noticed that once you get a little pile going somewhere that all the sudden it multiplies like uninvited ants at a picnic? It’s so easy to add just one more thing to the clutter pile… or worse yet, start another pile to collect different clutter – super yikes!

Ah, and let’s not forget the dreaded briefcase clutter, car clutter, or even purse clutter. Now men, I know you might not be accountable for what happens inside a purse, but what about backpack or even garage clutter? Yep, there’s equal opportunity for all 🙂

Workspace Clutter Control (WCC) Solution

Wouldn’t it be “neat” to have a WCC appointment each day on your schedule so you don’t end up with a desk like mine? For a while you might have to make it an appointment until it simply becomes habit. Strange… I do this almost every day for the kitchen, so why not my office? …hmmmm

I have some really big projects occurring this month, so I should probably take some time to create de-clutter my workspace. Then I won’t have all these visual distractions in front of me while I’m trying to accomplish other great things. Does clutter negatively impact your mental clarity? It sure does for me.

Workspace Clutter Control Action Item

Ah… what I really want to say is, “Stop It!” (to me and everyone, but this probably won’t help much). So how about this? Make an appointment with yourself to de-clutter your workspace so when you enter it next, it is ready for you to get productive immediately.  It may be helpful to make yourself an appointment on your planner until this becomes habitual.

Happy De-Cluttering! Ready? … Start, GO!

It can be all different this year…
if you plan to deliver different results in 2013!

  1. Great article–at first I thought this was a picture of MY desk!!! But since I’m moving–mine is actually clean!!! (okay, so everything is stuffed into boxes, but…). Great idea!! I’ll put this on my To Do list! Now where was that list?

  2. Yes, I am at an all time high……….for clutter!
The neat thing though, is that it will be easy to toss a whole lot of paperwork since I made another shift and no longer require all those notes I took while listening to several online teachers. Hurray!
