Effective Planning Prevents Poor Performance

Effective planning for Business Owners. Illustrated by businessman at his desk with laptop while taking notes on a notepad.
Effective planning supports you showing up successful.

Effective Planning Prevents
Poor Performance

Effective planning is a simple process.
Do you take time time to plan?
Do you notice when others appear unprepared?
Are you appropriately supporting yourself to be successful?

YOUR Business Strategy today is to stop for 5-10 minutes and review your calendar for planning and prep time. Is it there? Do you see any such thing on your calendar?

It is true that effective planning and preparation are two different actions. Planning is a mental exercise to gain clarity of what needs to be completed. Preparing could be mental but most often it involves taking action to gather all necessary elements. Why are we discussing this? Recently clients have brought up these two topics. Today, we focus on planning.

Effective planning is a strategy for success. In business it would be called a business strategy.  Let’s see if you are a good strategist 🙂

Effective planning before preparation,
before performance, before success

What about the opposite side- not planning properly? We’ve all seen it when someone isn’t aware they are showing up less than awesome. I find this is usually related to cramming or pencil-whipping through something, just to have anything. Too bad there isn’t some alert that this is about to become “the outcome of being unprepared”.

A great example of this is advertising or promotions. Do you see some really “bad” commercials? (I know, don’t laugh to hard.) Perhaps it’s because someone didn’t take the time to do proper planning and have the product and its message look good.

It’s sorta funny and sad how good content/copy often is appreciated, but typically goes unnoticed. In contrast, bad copy is always noticed! Evidence of effective planning is even noticed when one reads a well written letter, book, and/or email. Are you successfully showing up?

The Rub of Planning

Here it is: Planning is far too simple to execute. That’s right, I believe many don’t do planning because we think it should be more difficult. How could planning, which appears so easy or simple, deliver such outstanding results?

It’s just like drinking a proper amount of water each day. It’s simple simple and easy. It delivers awesome results. We just aren’t “into” planning. We know planning is good to do – just like drinking water. We don’t take time to make planning a habit.

Isn’t this insane? Effective planning is an organizational tool and efficiency tool. Planning is one factor to assure you show up in a successful manner. When planning is done well, preparation is a breeze. Why? You only need to execute or perform the plan to be a winner.

YOUR Brilliant Business Success Action Items for Effective Planning

  1. Open your calendar and plan your days for the rest of the week… even including your own project time.
  2. Assess your daily effectiveness and efficiency at the end of the week to evaluate how you could become a better planner.
  3. Repeat next week. Did your planning improve your performance this past week?

*Remember: A little practice goes a long way! Practice this with a new or big project. See/practice planning ahead on certain elements of the project. Then evaluate how successful the project is progressing. I imagine you will find there isn’t as much chaos and timelines are being met 🙂  Have some fun playing with this!
